Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
