Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
