The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advertisement made using Artificial Intelligence following facing considerable public disapproval.

The short ad was produced via AI-generated video and was originally published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Viewer Reaction and Removal

Following its publication, viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the film. A number of called it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This experience serves as an valuable lesson as we explore the effective application of Artificial Intelligence," said a representative from the company.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed various situations that can go wrong during the festive season, under the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI in Advertising

Adverts that include generative AI have become a rising trend among prominent brands, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos created using generative AI are susceptible to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also raised worries about automation in the advertising industry, with some commenters pointing out it could reduce opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Creators

After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

Bridge claimed, the creation took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then crafted during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a finished piece."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the sentiment for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, several companies have also faced scrutiny for using the technique in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "cheap" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the evolving discussion within the advertising and production sectors about the balance between technological innovation and creative integrity.
