European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
